About this event

Entrepreneur and climate activist Danielle Vogel will be the next speaker at our Virtual CelebSalons,  You probably know her better as the owner-operator of Glen's Garden Market, at 20th and S Streets. She's trying to affect climate change, one bite at a time.

She opened Glen's on Earth Day in 2013 with a promise of sourcing nearly everything from the states of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. She didn't do this lightly. Vogel comes from four generations of grocers but she went a different way, at first. She got a law degree, spent a decade as a policy advisor on Capitol Hill and worked as an environmental litigator enforcing the Clean Air Act. When federal efforts to pass comprehensive climate legislation failed, she decided to go local -- to join the Good Food movement and, as owner of Glen's, help foster local food producers who share her commitment to the environment. She has helped launch more than 90 sustainability focused food businesses by giving them shelf space.

She also practices what she preaches. Glen's is 100 percent solar powered, has a no-waste mandate for the kitchen and composts all organic waste. Her weekly radio show, Everyday Enviro, shares tips with real folks on making sustainable food choices.

The pandemic has posed many challenges, for her store and her local suppliers. She pivoted to a distance-shopping system, free delivery within the Dupont neighborhood and a busy grab-and-go business. For now, there are no bustling bar scenes or neighborhood patio mixers. But there is a robust fresh produce section, freshly made carry-out foods -- and, of course, all kinds of traditional and quirky foods from those local Good Food entrepreneurs.
