The closest Metro station is Foggy Bottom on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines. It is a .75 mile walk (about 15-20 minutes) from Foggy Bottom Metro to the National Academy of Sciences.

There is a small visitor lot off 21st Street. Currently, due to construction, 21st Street between Virginia Avenue and Constitution Avenue is closed to northbound traffic. To access the lot, travel south on 21st Street, and after crossing over C Street, turn right into the lot. Use the following address for directions to the visitor lot:?256 21st Street NW. Parking is not guaranteed.

About this event

The National Academy of Sciences building that was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in April 1924 and designed by architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. This architectural masterpiece blends classical, Byzantine, Egyptian, and Art Deco influences into one breathtaking building.  What you'll experience:

  • The magnificent Great Hall, featuring iconography by artist Hildreth Meière
  • Ceremonial rooms with architectural sculpture by Lee Lawrie and murals by Albert Herter
  • A peek inside the acoustically extraordinary Fred Kavli Auditorium (1970 wing)
  • Rotating art and science exhibitions exploring the intersection of art, science, and culture

The tour will include the Exhibit:  Science and the American Experiment: 250 Years of Innovation.  This exhibit is only viewable during NAS Building tours and select special events. Click here for more information about the exhibit,

The tour will begin at 11:30 AM but plan to arrive by 11:15 AM, using the entrance on 2100 C Street, NW.   Bring your government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license or passport).
