Does our psychology shape our politics, whether liberal or conservative? If so, how? TEDTalks speaker Dannagal Young, a political communication scholar, focuses on understanding how digital and traditional media interact with human psychology and affect democratic health...and how we might change our information landscape to improve society. Jay Van Bavel builds on this theme, addressing whether someone’s political identity actually affects their ability to process information. The answer, he’s found, lies in a cognitive phenomenon known as partisanship. Identifying social groups is an essential and healthy part of life. But it can become problematic when the group’s beliefs are at odds with reality. Next, listen to behavioral historian Christiane-Marie Abu Sarah, who explores how ordinary individuals make extraordinary decisions. Based on records of aggression, radicalization and conflict around the globe and over time, her work aims to raise awareness at home about how everyday habits feed social conflict. Our Sunday Soup Salon will feature these TEDTalks presenters. Join the conversation from 5 to 6:30 via Zoom. (You can view in advance, but it’s not necessary; website is TED.com). Dannagal G. Young, “The psychological traits that shape your political beliefs.” Jay Van Bavel, “Do politics make us irrational?” Christiane-Marie Abu Sarah, “How do daily habits lead to political violence?”
