Educating in Challenging Times: An Evening of Reflection and Discussion

Ronald Mason, Jr. brings a 30-year record of academic leadership to the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) as its ninth president. He helped develop its Vision 2020, a Roadmap for Renewal, Innovation, Success and Sustainability. He has launched a UDC Institute of Politics, Policy and History headed by former Mayor Sharon Pratt.

Mason’s arrival in July 2015 was welcomed by Mayor Muriel Bowser who said she looked forward to collaborating on exciting new initiatives and programs to transform the District’s public university. Dr. Mason had been president of the Southern University and A&M College System and of Jackson State University in Mississippi. He also held leadership positions at Tulane University in New Orleans and at the National Center for the Urban Community at Tulane and Xavier Universities.

Vision 2020 is the result of an intense review, including a survey of thousands of students, alumni, faculty and staff as well as polling from the wider District community. In launching the new Institute of Politics, Policy and History, Mason said its mission is to “rediscover District of Columbia history and its consequential role in determining contemporary politics and policy.” IPPH is designed to “encourage constructive, spirited dialogue about tough issues of the day; illuminating these conversations with insights from our city and our nation’s history.”
