Are you awed by the phenomenal Flemish and Dutch paintings at the National Gallery of Art? Come talk to Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., the just-retired curator of northern baroque paintings. He helped mount more than 40 exhibitions of art from this period until he retired in 2018. He also has been professor of art history at the University of Maryland.

After getting his doctorate from Harvard University, Wheelock came to the National Gallery in 1973 as the David E. Finley Fellow. The next year, he was appointed curator of Dutch and Flemish painting for the National Gallery.

Wheelock has lectured widely on Dutch and Flemish art and written many articles and a number of books and catalogues, including Perspective, Optics, and Delft Artists around 1650 (1977); Jan Vermeer (1981); Vermeer and the Art of Painting (1995); the catalogue of the Dutch collection at the National Gallery of Art, Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century (1995); and the catalogue of the Flemish collection at the Gallery, Flemish Paintings of the Seventeenth Century (2005). His 40 exhibitions of Dutch and Flemish paintings at the National Gallery included Anthony van Dyck (1990); Johannes Vermeer (1995); Jan Steen (1996); Aelbert Cuyp (2001); Gerard ter Borch (2004); Rembrandt’s Late Religious Portraits (2005); Jan Lievens (2008); Dutch Cityscapes (2009); Joachim Wtewael (2015); Drawings for Paintings in the Age of Rembrandt (2016); and Vermeer and Masters of Genre Painting: Inspiration and Rivalry in 2017.
