About this event
This month we are focusing on noir and neo-noir movies. Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas of the 1940s and 50s, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. They are associated with a low-key, black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. They use tilted camera angles, interplay of light and shadows, unbalanced framing, and the blurring of the lines between good and bad and right and wrong. Neo-noir has a similar style but with updated themes, content, style, and visual elements. (Wikipedia)
The two movies we’ve selected are from “best noir and neo-noir” lists found in various sources online. They are “The Third Man,” an example of noir from 1949, and “The Grifters,” an example of neo-noir from 1990. Both are available on Prime Video. Please see the movies before the meeting. Attendance is limited to 16 on a first-come-first-served basis.
