About this event
Congress created the National Portrait Gallery in 1968 with a mandate to tell the story of the United States through the lives of people who made significant contributions. Since then, concepts of both the people who are portrayed in the Gallery and the nature of their contributions have changed substantially.
In this tour, National Portrait Gallery docent Sheila Lopez will take a look at how portraiture has evolved over the years, focusing on how art portrays and responds to changing
technology and societal norms. Portraits will include some people you know well, such as Frederick Douglass and the Obamas, and others who are not as well known, such African-American Shakespearean actor Ira Aldridge and Japanese-American artist Roger Shimomura.
Maximum number of guests is 15.
