Rafe Pomerance has been an environmentalist and climate advocate for more than four decades. From the 1970s he has worked to raise awareness of US policy makers of the risks of climate change. His work with a handful of scientists, politicians and strategists is the focus of Nathaniel Rich's New York Times Magazine article and subsequent book Losing Earth. Rich recounts how Rafe and others sought to convince the world to act on climate change and describes how the fossil industry fought successfully to stop them.

Rafe previously served as President of Friends of the Earth (1980 to 1984), senior associate for climate change and ozone depletion policy at the World Resources Institute (1985-93), Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Environment and Development and U.S. climate negotiator (1993-99), and President of the Climate Policy Center. In recent years he has been a member of the National Academy’s Polar Research Board and served as Chairman of Arctic 21, a network of organizations focused on communicating the unraveling of the Arctic as a result of climate change. Rafe also serves as a consultant to the nonprofit ReThink Energy Florida, raising awareness of the impact of sea level rise in Florida.

At this August 5 CelebSalon event Rafe will speak about the history of climate-change policy and the strategies needed to change the course of climate change and sea level rise.
