Smell is the least important sense, one you’d be most willing to lose, said most adults in a recent survey. Further, 50 percent of young people ages 16-22 would rather lose their sense of smell than lose Facebook, according to a study reported in PC Magazine.

Throughout history, the role of smell has largely been underplayed. But millions of people have lost their sense of smell to Covid 19, prompting The New York Times Magazine to run a feature story, “The Forgotten Sense.” “If smell was ignored before, off in the hinterlands,” the writer remarks, “you could say that Covid put it on the map.”

Our Soup Salon will turn a spotlight on this mysterious but vital sense. We’ll learn about the historical significance of smell and why it is often overlooked though on a par with deafness or blindness. For an unusual sensory adventure, please have something strong-smelling (like coffee or chocolate) by your armchair.

(You can view the talks in advance, but it’s not necessary; website is TED.com).
