This monthly class will serve as an introduction to Easier Sitting.

Have you been curious about taking a Feldenkrais “Awareness Through Movement” lesson but uneasy about getting down on the floor? Do you spend many hours during the day sitting in a chair and wish to find more comfort and vitality? Would you like to improve your comfort in sitting and learn to interrupt and dissolve old, self-limiting postural habits, aches and movement limitations?

Join the Feldenkrais class on the first Wednesday every month for a chair lesson to learn the dynamics of easy and healthy sitting. In these lessons for all, we will explore improving the function of sitting in a dynamic way, through non-habitual movement explorations, reminding your brain of sensory-motor connections, and creating neurological balance and ease. Over the course of these lessons your spine can begin to regain it’s natural capacity for comfort, self-organization and ease of movement. Lessons done in sitting on a chair can help you discover your spine’s full potential, from finding the sits bones up to freeing the spine, chest and head, thereby reducing discomforts and facilitating the development of new postural habits that you can take into standing and creating more ease in all your daily activities.

With every lesson you will gain effective tools for your self-care that you can use at work, sitting at home or on a plane, playing a musical instrument seated, or whenever you wish to remind your brain and body of your improved organization.

For the seated chair lessons it would be best to have a chair with backrest but without any armrests if possible. Preferably a firm flat seat (not slanted) which has a height so that when sitting at the front edge of the chair your knees are level with your hips or just slightly lower. If need be, you can use a folded blanket to raise the seat level or to make up the distance from floor to feet (to raise feet, otherwise a footrest). See you in class!

Susanne Christov is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She lives in Dupont Circle and teaches private and group Feldenkrais classes in Dupont Circle and in the Washington metropolitan area.
