Hana S. Sharif will discuss the 2024 season lineup at Arena Stage, offering insights into the productions, her visionary plans for the theater's future, and reflections on her experiences as an African-American woman navigating the intricacies of the theater industry.

BIOGRAPHY

Hana has cultivated a dynamic career in theater, excelling in various roles such as artistic leader, director, playwright, and producer, with a specialization in strategic and cross-functional leadership.

Her journey began during her undergraduate studies at Spelman College, where she laid the foundation for her professional path. From 1997 to 2003, Hana co-founded and served as the Artistic Director of Nasir Productions, a theater committed to amplifying underrepresented voices and challenging conventional structures.

In 2003, Hana transitioned to Hartford Stage, a Tony Award-winning regional theater, marking a significant step in her career trajectory. Subsequently, she contributed her talents as a Program Manager at Arts Emerson, a prominent global theater company affiliated with Boston’s Emerson College, during 2012.

From 2014 to 2019, Hana assumed the role of Associate Artistic Director at Baltimore Center Stage, where she left an indelible mark by spearheading groundbreaking initiatives. Noteworthy achievements during her tenure include the creation of the innovative CS Digital program, which explores the intersection of art and technology. Additionally, she pioneered the Mobile Unit, aimed at reaching historically underserved audiences, while also enhancing community engagement. Her leadership proved instrumental in orchestrating multiple world and regional premieres, as well as steering the theater through a substantial building renovation and rebranding endeavor.

In 2018, Hana made history as the first Black woman to helm a major regional theater when she was appointed as the Augustin Family Artistic Director of The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Her trailblazing journey continued as she assumed the role of Artistic Director at Arena Stage following the retirement of Molly Smith in June 2023.

Hana holds a BA from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA and and MFA from the University of Houston.
